What are Chimney Tops?

Chimney tops, also known as chimney caps, chimney shrouds or chimney caps, are essential components that sit atop your chimney. They serve multiple purposes, such as shielding the chimney from external elements, preventing rain, snow, animals and debris from entering, and optimizing airflow in the flue for efficiency and safety.

If you have a prefabricated fireplace, then a flat rain pan sits atop your chimney chase to protect the chimney structure, and a round metal chimney flue cap sits atop the flue pipe to protect the inside of the metal flue system. An optional chimney shroud for a prefabricated fireplace is mostly decorative to give your chimney chase a finished look.

If you have a masonry fireplace and want to cover the entire chimney chase, then we recommend having a custom masonry chimney cap fabricated. Our custom masonry chimney caps are comprised of a roof (for rain) and screening (for animals) and can be used as a replacement for worn out chimney caps. These chimney caps act as a protective barrier against rain, animals, and debris, ensuring your chimney remains in optimal condition. Custom made masonry chimney tops are made specifically to match the dimensions of the entire chimney chase, not just the interior flue (see standard masonry chimney caps below). These chimney tops can be painted black or be made from copper to fit almost any look you’re going for.

Standard Masonry Chimney Caps

If you’re just seeking a functional chimney top, we offer standard size chimney caps for masonry fireplaces. These chimney chimney bolt directly onto your flue system to keep out rain and animals.

Some of our standard-sized chimney caps even incorporate a spring-loaded “lock top” damper. With this type of chimney cap, a heavy-gauge stainless steel cable runs down your fireplace and an anchor plate is installed inside your fireplace for operation and to keep the cable and handle out of the way.

Lock top damper chimney caps have become a popular option for older fireplaces with an inoperable damper or if a damper has been removed. Their heavy gauge construction ensures years of functioning.
